Keynote Highlights

After an older speech played from Steve Jobs to open the new Steve Jobs Theater, Tim Cook started the keynote off with touching remarks on the departed Steve Jobs. Next, Apple announced that their stores were all being redesigned and rebranded as Apple Townsquares – “where all of Apple comes together.” The new features at the stores include plazas, creative forums, boardrooms for developers, the genius grove and the Today at Apple program.

Now the rumors are done and the leaks are a thing of the past. The forward-thinking iPhone X has been announced as a 5.8-inch smartphone with an OLED display that is edge-to-edge. Apple’s taken Retina Display to the next level with iPhone X, now calling it Super Retina Display with a resolution of 2,436 x 1,125.

The design of the phone is a significant jump forward from previous models with an all-glass case and stainless steel frame with a vertically oriented dual camera on the back. Of course, it’s water- and dust-resistant too. Finally, one of the biggest things though: no Home button, and it’s all in on Face ID facial recognition to unlock your phone. Pre-order for iPhone 8 starts on October 27 and the device is available November 3.

iPhone 8 & 8 Plus

Although the iPhone 8 isn’t a huge leap forward, but more of a significant upgrade to the iPhone 7, it still packs an impressive punch with all of its new hardware upgrades. The phone has more processing power, so general usability is significantly improved.

The biggest upgrade for both phones unsurprisingly comes with the cameras. The smaller iPhone 8 now comes with a 12 mega-pixel camera with new image sensor and optical image stabilization. This means Instagram photos are about to be a whole lot sharper and vibrant. The iPhone 8 Plus will receive new image sensors for both of its 12-megapixel cameras, and it will also come with a standard and telephoto lens.

The iPhone 8 & 8 Plus are a tad more expensive than last year’s entry-level models with iPhone 8 starting at $700 for 64 GB and 8 Plus for $800. The device storage options though have increased with 64 and 256 GB options available.

Pre-order for iPhone 8 & 8 Plus starts on Friday September 15 and the devices are available September 22.

Apple TV 4K

Apple TV finally gets the 4K upgrade it deserves! But it’s not any regular old 4K, it’s 4K HDR which means gorgeous resolution. AppleTV now will come with the same A10 chip as the iPad Pro and it is twice as fast and graphics are 4 times faster. Also, all of the 4K content coming to iTunes will be the same price as HD and upgraded to 4K HDR at no extra cost.

Oh, and Amazon Instant Video is finally coming to Apple TV (ending a very frustrating streaming feud between the two giants). The new Apple TV 4K will be available on Friday September 22.
