iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus

It has become pretty much an established fact that Apple’s annual September keynote involves the reveal of the new iPhone model. We, and many other media publications, are all in on the speculation that the iPhone 7 & 7 Plus will be the major device upgrades announced. Yet, unlike the major design upgrade that occurred from iPhone 5s to iPhone 6, CNET speculates that the 7 & 7 Plus will maintain the same form factor as the 6 & 6s devices. MacRumors already has gone one device further and is reporting that 2017’s iPhone 8 may be the model with a major redesign involving a re-adoption of a glass body as well as Touch ID and camera being integrated into the phone’s body.

However, the iPhone 7 is not without its own design tweaks. Mashable has gone on record saying they anticipate the aluminum case may lose antenna lines and that the iPhone 7 Plus will be getting a dual-camera design, with the second camera intended for capturing additional information to enable post depth-of-field changes. General phone dimensions, curves and the screen is expected to remain the same.

Yet, the most anticipated and talked about design change is the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Goodbye 3.5mm headphone jack! Hello Beats headphones!

Reported as early as November of last year by Mashable, the iPhone 7 device update appears to banish the much beloved 3.5mm headphone to the design archives, where the likes of CDs, VHS and tape cassettes gather dust. Change is hard, but it should not come as that big of a surprise that Apple would move in this direction, especially with its acquisition of Beats (we even weighed in on the topic in January).

Apple bought Beats for its talent, successful headphone brand and music streaming platform, so the time has to come to fully integrate the brands and really start to make a return on that substantial investment. Also, it has been 4 years since the Apple’s EarPods have been redesigned, so the time has come to move on. The real question is: Will there be lightning port or Bluetooth enabled headphones that come with the iPhone 7? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Other Reveals? Surprises?

iOS 10 will most likely be launched in tandem with the new iPhone, as Apple unveiled it in June at its Worldwide Developers Conference. Most likely we will see a bit more of a detailed walkthrough with iOS 10, with a possible dive into the long-talked about Apple Music redesign.

Most publications are not anticipating any big news in regards to iPads or MacBooks. The only other hardware that will be updated looks to be the Apple Watch. Although not confirmed, Wareable anticipates that much needed changes with a redesign could be a big item announced tomorrow.

That’s a wrap for the biggest items we think Apple will touch on tomorrow at the September 7 event. As always, we will be live-tweeting the event, so tune to our Twitter channel here at 10 a.m. PT.
