This week, Apple went smaller in more ways than one. In this edition of Moshi’s Week in Tech we dive into the preliminary reviews for the new iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro.
Is a smaller iPhone really better? This seems to be the question of the week as Apple released the 4-inch iPhone SE. So far, the reviews rolling out are mostly first impression reviews. The phone is not even available to the public yet, so the real jury is out until March 31.
Fortunately for us all, Fortune did a rather nice roundup of some of the major publications’ first impression reviews. Consensus seems to be that the iPhone SE is fast and delivers a lot of, but not all of, the latest iPhone model features for its cheap $399 price tag.
Lauren Goode of The Verge sees a glimmer of Apple’s genius in the device as “a shiny little fishing lure for first-time buyers or people who feel overdue for an upgrade.” The battery life on the iPhone SE appears to be pleasing reviewers, with Geoffrey Fowler of The Wall Street Journal finding the SE outperforms both the 6s and 5s in his own test by lasting an additional two hours. The phone is “blazingly fast,” according to Mark Prigg of The Daily Mail, and some others have nicknamed the SE as a “pocket rocket.”
So far, the iPhone SE seems to be pretty impressive. It used to be that smaller phones meant compromising on many of the latest smartphone innovations. Now Apple has made a phone that can either bring those super late adopters back into their stores, or possibly help Apple further expand its growth in nations like Brazil, China and India.

However, the iPhone was not the only thing that went smaller on Monday. We dive into the 9.7-inch iPad Pro below.
The 9.7-inch iPad Pro
The iPad Pro line took another step to claim itself as the new king of Apple’s tablet line with the newly announced 9.7-inch iPad Pro. The device is smaller and cheaper than the 12.9-inch iPad Pro model announced last fall. Apple is clearly determined to replace PCs with iPad Pros, with Tim Cook saying in the keynote that the iPad Pro is “the ultimate PC replacement.”
Noah Throop of Mashable feels the 9.7-inch is the best tablet Apple has ever made, even surpassing the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. In regards to whether or not you should buy the iPad Pro, Jason Cipriani of Fortune praises the new 9.7-inch model for its healthy performance in a small form factor, as well as its overall portability.
We can’t wait to get our hands on the new iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro. How about you? Which device are you most excited to actually get into your hands on March 31? Let us know in the comments.
