Tech Tip: Charging

Power chargers are often an afterthought, something that most people probably have stashed in a drawer or two around their house. I know I have a few stacked up from over the years as I have accumulated new devices. While all of these chargers can accomplish the same general task, it is important to realize not all chargers are created equal. The number of Amps – amount of power – your charger can output, how much power your device is able to support and what additional capabilities your charger can offer are all factors in determining which charger you should choose.

The allure of “fast charging.”

“It just doesn’t charge fast enough!” First world problem, yes, but one that we’ve all experienced. Many of the default chargers that come with your devices support an average of 2.0 Amps, with just one port available for charging. Apple’s iPhone charger, for instance, are only 1 Amp, while iPad Air 2 chargers increase to 2.5 Amps.

The “fast charging” chargers available today offer an average of 2.0 Amps and go up to 2.5 Amps, such as Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charging Wall Charger and Motorola’s TurboPower™ 15 Wall Charger. Moshi’s current Rewind two-port USB currently supports 2.1 Amps, with technology that will automatically detect when two devices are plugged in at the same time and send the appropriate amount of power to each device. However, given Rewind’s current power limitations, this unfortunately means that you cannot charge an iPad at full speed while charging an iPhone or another mobile device.

To resolve this, Moshi’s upcoming Rewind 2, will upgrade to support 17 Ws and will feature a fast charging 2.4 Amp along with a standard 1 Amp port. This means that you can charge an iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6s/6s Plus at their standard charge times. Of course, these times vary depending on device usage while charging.

How much power can your device handle?

Charging does not just happen exclusively in the wall plug, but also within a device itself. Depending on how much power your device can actually support, you will notice longer or shorter charging times regardless of how much power your charger is delivering.

One major category here are battery cases, which come with the challenge of needing to charge both the battery pack and your phone. Many only support up to 2.0 Amps, and do not have the technology to intelligently allocate power to the phone and the case at the same time.

Moshi’s iGlaze Ion, released just yesterday, supports up to 2.4 Amps. Using a fast charging port, like the one on the Rewind 2, you can charge Moshi’s iGlaze Ion and iPhone 6s simultaneously from 0% to 100% in 2.73 hours. That is a total of 4,028 mAh (iPhone 6s battery- 1,715 mAh + 2,750 mAh iGlaze Ion) charged in under three hours. This is faster than most other battery cases on the market today, and outperforms the majority of them for the iPhone 6s.

It’s not just about charging.

Devices, like iPhone battery cases, can also do some amazing things while charging, such as syncing. A good example is our iGlaze Ion, it allows for data pass through while being charged from a computer. That means while charging your iPhone and external battery pack, you can transfer information to and from your iPhone and computer; allowing you to do so much more than recharging your device’s low battery.

It is a wild energetic world out there today with all the innovation occurring in the mobile battery and charging space.
